Lands on Merchants and brands

67

maximum days on Awin Access before a transaction validates itself, with no check of any kind applied

Auto-validation is a timeout, not a decision

From Awin's own documentation: the auto-validation period is "the amount of time after a transaction is tracked before it's automatically approved if you haven't already validated it."

No fraud rules. No return-likelihood scoring. No verification of any kind. Elapsed time alone.

Which leaves a merchant with 2 options and both cost money. Check every transaction by hand against the order system, which costs labour. Or let the clock run, and pay commission on goods that came back.

Nobody sells a model that scores return likelihood from order attributes - despite merchants holding exactly the data such a model would need.

The cost of this is silent and continuous, which is part of why it rarely appears in a budget.

What I could not establish

  • Whether any network runs undocumented internal logic before auto-validating. The published behaviour is time-based only.

The definition quoted in full, and the maximum of up to 67 days on Awin Access. The page describes no fraud rule, no return-likelihood scoring and no check of any kind beyond elapsed time.

Every source carries the date it was read. Where there is no link the document is held on file and cited by publisher and title.

My read

The merchant is not being careless here. No product exists that scores return likelihood from order attributes, so there are only 2 options: pay people to check every transaction, or let the clock run and absorb the leakage. Most choose the clock, because the cost of the clock never appears on anybody's line.

What I'd do with this

Pull your last 90 days of auto-validated transactions and check what proportion later returned. If nobody has ever run that number, it is the one to run first. You cannot argue for a change to the window until you can say what the window costs.
